Costs & Billing

Students have no out-of-pocket costs for all services through CAPS (counseling), most medical clinics, 24/7 nurse and mental health advice, and more. These services are covered by a health service fee (HSF) which is automatically included in tuition.

Some medical services, such as immunizations and prescriptions, will be billed to insurance or require out-of-pocket payment. Having personal health insurance is important for services not covered by the HSF and for emergencies when you need to seek care outside of UHC. If you need insurance coverage, learn about your options.

What is the health service fee?

Most students pay a health service fee (HSF) automatically built into tuition. This fee helps to minimize students’ out-of-pocket costs for medical services (there are no costs for counseling services at CAPS). The HSF covers areas that students have indicated were the most important to include, such as copays for most medical clinics and lab tests for common STIs.

If you are not sure if you pay the HSF or if you are eligible to use UHC, please email ContactUHC@med.umich.edu or call 734-764-8320. For 2025-26, the health service fee is approximately $226 per semester.

Students can use UHC services during the term and for 1-2 weeks before and after the enrolled term ends (the grace period). The fee does not cover services outside of UHC, such as those at Michigan Medicine or urgent care.

What is the prepaid plan?

U-M students between semesters and recent alumni, among others, are eligible to purchase a prepaid plan for access to UHC services for $262 per term (fall, winter, spring/summer).

The plan is not prorated, retroactive or refundable and is not an insurance policy.  If you are currently covered by health insurance, please compare your insurance benefits to the prepaid plan. It may be more cost-effective for you to pay for each service you receive (fee-for-service) and seek reimbursement from your insurance company. The cost of the prepaid plan is not reimbursed by insurance companies.

Coverage periods are:

  • Fall: September 1 - December 31
  • Winter: January 1 - April 30
  • Spring/Summer: May 1 - August 31
